As part of my ‘Ask The Tech’ series going on in our Facebook Group, Jim H. brings up the issue that his Aprilaire thermostat says off and he can’t get past anything else on the screen. I posted our conversation below that we had through Messenger. I figured this would help others solve this issue as well since its on the easier side that anyone should be able to fix.
Jim H: Hi, my Aprilaire thermostat suddenly started displaying an “Off” message and I can’t seem to get it working again. What should I do?
Tim David (HVAC Tech): Hello! The “Off” message on your Aprilaire thermostat is typically a sign of a power issue. This could be due to low or dead batteries, a power supply interruption, or displaced batteries. First, try replacing the batteries with new ones. If the batteries were recently replaced, ensure they are inserted correctly.
Jim H: I replaced the batteries, but the thermostat still shows “Off” and none of the buttons are responding. What’s my next step?
Tim David (HVAC Tech): If new batteries don’t resolve the issue, the problem might be more technical. In some cases, a reset is needed. Remove the batteries, wait for about 3 minutes, and then re-insert them. This can help reset the thermostat and clear any minor glitches.
Jim H: I tried resetting, but it’s still not working. Could there be another issue?
Tim David (HVAC Tech): If the reset doesn’t work, it’s possible that the thermostat itself may be malfunctioning. One way to test this is to bypass the thermostat. Turn off the power to your furnace, remove the front of the thermostat, and connect the red and white wires together. Turn the power back on. If the furnace starts, the issue is likely with the thermostat.
Jim H: It looks like the furnace is working fine when bypassed. Do I need a new thermostat?
Tim David (HVAC Tech): Yes, if bypassing the thermostat starts the furnace, then your thermostat is likely the issue. It might be time to consider replacing it. Aprilaire thermostats usually have a warranty, so check with your installer or the manufacturer for potential warranty coverage.
Jim H: Thanks for the help! Any recommendations for a new thermostat?
Tim David (HVAC Tech): For a replacement, a basic Honeywell thermostat, like the T4 model, is often a good choice. It’s reliable and user-friendly. However, if you have specific needs or preferences, I can help you find a model that suits your requirements.
How To Prevent the Off Message from Displaying on your Aprilaire Thermostat
Expert: To prevent the “Off” message on your Aprilaire thermostat, follow these tips:
- Regular Battery Replacement: Change batteries periodically to avoid power issues.
- Keep It Clean: Dust and debris can affect thermostat functionality. Clean it regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
- Check Settings: Ensure the thermostat isn’t accidentally set to “off” or “vacation mode.”
- Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Don’t place the thermostat near heat sources or drafts, as this can affect its readings and functionality.
- Regular Maintenance: Have your HVAC system and thermostat checked annually by a professional to ensure everything is in working order.
