What is MERV and Why Does It Matter?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively an air filter captures particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. What MERV rating should I use for my home?

MERV 8 is standard for most homes (good balance). MERV 11-13 is better for allergies or pets. MERV 14+ may restrict airflow unless your system is designed for it. Always check your HVAC manufacturer’s recommendation.

Does higher MERV always mean better?

Not exactly. Higher MERV filters have smaller pores, capturing more particles but also increasing pressure drop. If your fan cannot overcome the resistance, airflow drops, reducing system efficiency and potentially damaging components.

How does pressure drop affect my HVAC?

Pressure drop (inches of water column) measures resistance. Every filter causes some drop. Most residential systems can handle up to 0.2-0.3″ w.c. without significant airflow loss. Above that, you may need a thicker filter or a more powerful fan.

Can I use a MERV 13 filter in any furnace?
