This summer’s wildfires brought an unexpected challenge to not only my doorstep, but 100’s of thousands more. Like everyone else, I was concerned about the smoky haze outside. So, I did an indoor air quality test, to find out how the wildfire smoke was affecting our air quality our home’s air quality and my score was alarmingly low.
I found on the EPA’s website that the air quality around the wildfire regions up north was severely compromised. Realizing the immediate need for a robust solution, I began looking into new models of air purifiers.
One of the units I found was the Alen BreatheSmart 75i, a purifier that not only improved our indoor air quality score but also provided much-needed relief during those smoky days. In this review, I’ll share my firsthand experience with the Alen BreatheSmart 75i, detailing how it has significantly enhanced the air we breathe at home.

Filter light indicator
It is also equipped with a filter-led light indicator, so you won’t have a hard time guessing when your filter is due for a change. The filter indicator is based on the time the air purifier has been on and the fan’s speed. It will turn from green to orange to alert you about changing the filter and orange to red when you need to change the filter.

BreathSmart 75i Setup
First-time setup is pretty easy; everything can be set up in under 5 minutes. It does not come with remote control, but the control panel is touch and easy to operate. Besides the sleek control panel, you can use the app to monitor and control the air purifier from anywhere. Now that is way better than a remote control.
Removing the filter is easy and comes off with just a snap off the front cover, which is magnetic.
A pre-filter before the primary filter catches larger particles before they can find their way into the primary true HEPA filter. You can vacuum the prefilter from time to time, but the main filter has a long life of about 12-18 months.

It has four fan settings and 4 led lights to indicate the air quality at a particular time, with blue being the cleanest and purple indicating the worst air quality. Here is a quick overview of what each LED color on the 75i unit represents:
Levels of airborne particles (PM2.5)
Blue | Excellent | 0-3 |
Green | Good | 4-8 |
Orange | Fair | 9-20 |
Red | Poor | 21-35 |
Purple | Very poor | 36+ |
This purifier has a built-in ionizer, but it does not create ozone.
Best Placement Of the 75i
The unit itself is not too big and won’t take up much space in a room.

In terms of where to place your purifier, Alen recommends placing it along the longest walls of the room. There is no need to leave space between the back of the purifier and the wall at the back so you can safely position your purifier against the wall. This is because the air intake is in the sides of the unit, and the purified air comes from the top behind the display panel.
BreatheSmart 75i Filtration process
This purifier has an H13 True HEPA filter and a carbon filter. The combination of the different filters helps clean the air & remove unwanted pollutants, such as those below:
- Allergens
- Bacteria
- Chemical fumes (vocs)
- Dander
- Dust
- Mold
- Odor
- dust
- Pet fur.
- Smoke odors

This model has an exceptionally high performance, independently verified by AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers). Not all filters are independently verified, so with this in mind, you are assured that you are getting the quality as is marketed. It has an AHAM stamp of approval.
The air filters can last anywhere from 12 to 18 months, making them cheaper than any other air filters on the market in the long run.
CADR Rating of the 75i
The CADR rating, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, of the Alen BreatheSmart 75i is an impressive 347. To put this into perspective, this rating surpasses many similar air purifier on the market, positioning it as a top performer in air purification efficiency.
The CADR rating is a measure of the volume of filtered air an air purifier delivers, with higher numbers indicating better performance. In comparison to other models, a CADR of 347 means the Alen BreatheSmart 75i is highly effective at cleaning air quickly, especially in larger spaces. This efficiency is crucial for areas with high pollution levels or for households requiring rapid air purification due to allergies or respiratory concerns.
Noise levels of the 75i
When it comes to noise levels, everyone wants to have the quietest air purifier, which is exactly what the 75i provides.
The unit is relatively quiet, actually quieter than any other similar air purifier on the market. Even on the Turbo setting, the sound levels are around 49 decibels, so you won’t be able to hear it when the tv is switched on.
You can’t even hear it running unless you are 2 feet away. Below are the sound levels on each fan setting.
Speed 1: 25 dB;
Speed 2: 33 dB;
Speed 3: 39 dB;
Speed 4: 44 dB;
Turbo:49 dB.
Portability
Portability is a key feature of the Alen BreatheSmart 75i, despite its larger size compared to other models in the Alen range. This purifier is designed with mobility in mind, equipped with smooth-rolling wheels that make room-to-room movement effortless.
While ideal for most surfaces, I’ve noticed the wheels may be less effective on hard wooden floors, requiring a bit of lifting in such cases. Thankfully, the unit includes a well-placed back handle, which I’ve found incredibly useful for balancing and maneuvering the purifier when needed.
Weighing in at 27 lbs, it strikes a good balance between sturdiness and portability, making it a versatile choice for various home settings.
Coverage Area of the 75i
Besides its exceptionally quiet operation, the maximum rated coverage area is around 1300 sq. feet. So basically, it will take about 30 minutes to clean up the air in that size of the room. However, that does not mean it can’t clean up the air in a room that is larger than it. That simply means it still takes double the time to clean up the air in a 2600 square feet room.
Smart sensor
The smart sensors on these air purifiers detect dust and other pollutants in the air. When there are pollutants in the air, the air purifier kicks into action automatically, speeding up or slowing down fans to improve air quality.
You might notice that for the first few minutes of running it, it’s going to be running on high (especially if it’s the first time you are running it), but after the air quality stabilizes, it’s going to be running a little bit lower.
The auto mode has to be on for the fan to adjust the speed depending on changes in the surrounding air quality. For example, when you start cooking. The fan will speed up to try and kill the cooking smell.
So, turn on auto mode and enjoy allergy-free air in your home, which is unbelievably awesome.
Power consumption of the 75i
When it comes to electricity usage, it is energy efficient and star certified. Using this unit all the time throughout the day on the highest speed setting will only cost you $.13 per day
Here is a breakdown of energy use by this unit:
$.02 per day on speed 1 and $.13 per day on Turbo.
And if you were to run your 75i on speed 3 24/7, it would cost about $26 per year, but that is unrealistic, considering that you won’t have to run the unit on turbo 24/7. So, running the unit should cost you less than that annually, say, $15.
Not only will this unit improve the quality of the air you breathe, but it will also significantly reduce dusting on surfaces of your home.
Lifetime warranty
The warrant is indefinite, meaning your unit will be covered throughout its lifetime. And that includes troubleshooting, repairs, and even replacement of your air purifier.
The lifetime warranty assures you of every penny you spend on this unit. But take note that this warranty does not include customers based in Canada.
